Wi-Fi is essential for an Amazon Echo speaker for letting you interact with it by processing your commands. Without Wi-Fi, an Echo just acts as a traditional Bluetooth speaker losing its fancy features which are mostly dependant on a data network.

Unfortunately, some owners of an Amazon Echo, Echo Dot, or Echo Plus speakers are experiencing some trouble connecting it to a Wi-Fi network. And after the Echo unit is connected, it keeps on disconnecting. If that’s the case, we will help you fix the issue.

Here we have provided 11 ways that will help you in connecting your Amazon Echo to Wi-Fi without any issue. Let’s take a look.

1. Restart Wi-Fi Router and Echo

The above picture should be available on every gadget as a reminder to try it first before proceeding to other fixes. A simple reboot can fix anything. Therefore, switch off and unplug your Wi-Fi modem and Echo unit to restart them. Hopefully, they will connect fine after that.

2. Connect Wi-Fi Properly

Setting up an Echo unit can be a challenging job if the Wi-Fi setup starts throwing tantrums. We would suggest you to perform the Echo setup first. If you're facing issues while setting it up, check our guide for solutions to fix the Echo setup woes.

3. Connect to Right Wi-Fi Network

Some users have more than one Wi-Fi connections at their place, out of which only one works properly. If you have linked Echo to both, verify that it’s connected to the right one. Also applicable if you have a dual-band Wi-Fi network setup.

To check the currently connected Wi-Fi network, follow these steps:

Step 1: Open the Alexa app linked with your Echo and tap on Devices at the bottom.

Step 2: Tap on Echo & Alexa followed by your Echo.

Step 3: The app will take you to the Echo device settings. Confirm the Wi-Fi name under the Wi-Fi network option.

Sadly, you cannot pick the 'Forget a Wi-Fi network' option from the Alexa app. You need to either turn off the router, change its password, reset your Echo and restart the setup process again.

4. Update Wi-Fi Password

Entering wrong passwords is often the cause of the Wi-Fi issue. Did you or someone else recently change the Wi-Fi password? If yes, you need to update the password in your Echo too. For that, go to your Echo device settings in the Alexa app and tap on Change next to Wi-Fi. Then follow the on-screen instructions to set up Wi-Fi.

Note: You cannot update the Wi-Fi password with a single tap in the Alexa app. You need to follow the full Wi-Fi setup process.

5. Delete Saved Passwords on Amazon

To make it easy for you to switch between Echo devices, Amazon remembers your Wi-Fi passwords. You need to delete the password from Amazon, run Wi-Fi setup again on the Alexa app (using change Wi-Fi option) and hopefully, everything will be fine.

To delete saved passwords, follow these steps:

Step 1: Open the Amazon website and under your name, click on Manage Your Content and Devices.

Step 2: Click on Preferences at the top.

Step 3: Under Preferences, click the small down arrow next to Saved Wi-Fi Passwords and hit the Delete button for Your saved Wi-Fi passwords.

Note: In my case, the Delete button is not available since I didn't save any password.

6. Unhide Wi-Fi Network

Many times hidden networks don’t connect well with Echo devices. If your Wi-Fi is hidden, we would suggest to unhide the network and then try connecting it to your Echo.

7. Remove Wi-Fi Extender

While the primary purpose of extenders is to increase the Wi-Fi range, using them with the Echo doesn’t go well at times. So skip linking the Echo to one and connect the unit directly with your Wi-Fi router.

8. Switch to a Simple Wi-Fi Password

If your Wi-Fi password has complex or special characters, some Echo devices aren’t entirely happy with it. While that shouldn’t be the case with any smart gadget, hopefully, it’s a temporary issue with the Echo too.

For now, we suggest changing your Wi-Fi password to non-complex characters without symbols such as asterisks (*) and then update the same in the Alexa app.

9. Update Alexa App

Astonishingly, using an old Alexa app could also be your culprit for Wi-Fi connection disruptions. Updating the app will squash all the Wi-Fi bugs. Therefore, try that as well.

10. Change Router Security

Your Wi-Fi router might be using WPA + WPA2 security method. If none of the fixes mentioned above solve it, change router security type to either WPA or WPA2 only. The steps vary from router to router, so check your Wi-Fi routers model number and look for instructions accordingly.

11. Change Wi-Fi Frequency Band

While the Echo is designed to connect to both the Wi-Fi bands (2.4 GHz and 5 GHz), switching to the other one helps sometimes. So make sure you've defined both the bands clearly from your router settings and connected the phone as well as the Echo to the same band.

Tip: Usually, the Echo will connect to 2.4GHz, and you can switch to 5GHz for most modern phones support it and will have less interference from other 2.4GHz devices.

Last Resort: Reset Echo

If nothing helps, you might have to take the harsh step of resetting your Echo. Resetting the device will delete all the settings and restore it to the factory version. You will have to set it up again like a new Echo device.

1. Set Up Amazon Echo and Alexa Properly

Step 1. Install the Alexa app and Plug-in Amazon Echo

Install the Alexa app on your Android or iOS device. But, don’t open it yet. Plug the Amazon Echo device into an electric socket. It will light up and the ring will turn blue for a minute or two. Once the ring turns yellowish orange, launch the Alexa app that you just installed on your phone.

Step 2. Launch the Alexa App and Sign in

When you launch the Alexa app, you'll be asked to sign in using your Amazon account. If you have an Amazon account, use your existing credentials. If, however, you are a new user, create a new Amazon account.

Step 3. Wait for Orange Light on Echo

After that, you'll be asked to connect to Wi-Fi on the screen that says 'Begin Echo Setup'. Tap the Connect to Wi-Fi button. You will then be taken to the Wait for the orange light ring screen.

If your Amazon Echo device is showing the orange light, well and good. However, if your echo device is stuck in the blue light ring, press the Action button of your Echo device for 5-10 seconds until you get the orange light ring. Then, tap the Continue button on your Alexa app.

Step 4. Manually Connect to Amazon Wi-Fi

You'll then be taken to the Manually connect to Echo screen. This step is very crucial and it's important to follow it carefully.

Here’s what you need to do. Leave the Alexa app and open the Wi-Fi Settings on your phone. Under Wi-Fi connections, you'll see a new Wi-Fi connection with the name Amazon-xxx, where 'x' can be any digit.

Note: It may take up to two minutes to show this new connection name under your Wi-Fi Settings. Kindly have patience.

Then, tap this connection to connect. As soon as you tap the connection, your Echo device will then say her first words that you are connected. But, that’s not even the end of the story.

Once you connect to this Amazon Wi-Fi, you'll get a notification saying Wi-Fi has no Internet access on Android. Tap the notification and select Yes from the pop-up menu. This step is also extremely important. If you don’t tap the notification and press Yes, you will face the Wi-Fi setup issue on Echo.

If, somehow, you missed the Wi-Fi has no Internet access notification and your Echo is now showing the violet light ring, hold the Action button on your Echo device to enter setup mode again.

Then, repeat the steps mentioned above and this time make sure to tap the Wi-Fi has no Internet access notification followed by selecting Yes from the menu. Once you tap Yes, go back to the Alexa app and you will be connected successfully. Tap the Continue button.

Step 5. Connect to Home/Office Wi-Fi

You'll then be asked to select your Wi-Fi network. Tap your Wi-Fi network and enter the password. If you want to you can also save your Wi-Fi password to Amazon. Finally, hit the Connect button.

Your Echo device will then finish the setup process and you'll be notified on the next screen that the setup is complete. Tap the Continue button. That’s all you have to do to set up Echo and Alexa without any issue.
